What are stained glass windows?
There have been stained glass windows in Christian churches as
early as the 5th century. Today stained glass windows not only
adorn churches but also private homes and commercial buildings.
They can be figurative, symbolic or ornamental. Traditionally
they are made of coloured glass, which is often painted with vitreous
glass paint for added line and shading detail (e.g. figurative
windows). The paint is fired into the glass at very high temperatures
and then the individual glass pieces are assembled into panels
with lead came, which is soldered at the joints.
