Veterans Memorial Chapel
"Peace window"
at the Fisherman's Memorial Hospital in Lunenburg NS

Father Coote, the Veterans Unit Chaplain, was delighted at the idea of turning the tiny plain room into a more spiritual and peaceful space.

He contacted us and relayed his and the veteran's wishes for a window that would commemorate the veterans, but at the same time be uplifting, spiritual and an artistic homage to peace. Some of the symbolism they envisioned was a white dove, the symbol of peace and red poppies as a sign of remembering the fallen Canadian soldiers.

Sue Obata was the artist chosen to design this window and according to Father Coote she surpassed all of his expectations. The dove is central to the window and in its wings the word peace is written in over 140 languages. The dove is flying toward a warm yellow light, a symbol of hope and spiritual truth. In the background are poppies in a deep red and the blue ocean situating us in the Maritimes.

As Sue and Norbert were working on the stained glass window they kept thinking of the small inconspicuous room that was going to be its home. (continues below..)

They finally decided that in order to make the chapel into a more special place they had to transform the entire room. They proposed their idea of painting the walls, laying new floor, building an altar and purchasing six new chairs to Fr. Coote who was thrilled by their enthusiasm.

Thanks to the generosity of many volunteers the chapel has undergone these many changes, which were finalized at the beginning of November. The dedication of the new chapel was on Saturday Nov. 25 2006
